Associated Builders and Contractors of Arkansas Apprenticeship Programs |
To get enrolled in any apprenticeship program in the State of Arkansas, the first thing you would need to do is to get employed by an electrical or plumbing contractor depending on which trade you are interested in. I can provide a list of contractors that are members of the Associated Builders and Contractors (the association ACTA is affiliated with) upon request. Most of the time you can apply to these places online. Once you get hired, you'll go through a brief probationary period then your employer will enroll you into an apprenticeship program.
Here at ACTA, we use NCCER curriculum, which earns apprentices nationally recognized credentials. The semester tuition for an ABC Member is $400 and many times, your employer will cover the cost of your school. When you would begin classes depends on when you get employed. Here at ACTA, apprentices meet one night a week for 4 hours. They have a fall and spring semester just like traditional school. In addition to regular classes, we’ve incorporated some correspondence booklets to help offset some of the in-person class time. The apprenticeship program takes approx. 4 years to complete but it fluctuates depending on your work schedule. Electrical apprentices are required to obtain 576 classroom hours and plumbing apprentices are required to complete 640 classroom hours. Both trades require 8,000 OJT (on the job training) hours to be completed while enrolled in the program. So the process is based more on hours than full calendar years. After the classroom hours and OJT hours requirement has been met, the apprentice then applies to take their journeyman exam. Passing the journeyman exam officially makes you a Journeyman Electrician or Journeyman Plumber and you will be allowed to work without being supervised.
